Frequently Asked Questions
Should I take this class?
Yes!
Are you just saying that?
No!
What kind of programming/CS background are students expected to have before they take CS 111?
None. Almost everyone who takes CS 111 comes in without any programming/CS background, so I don't expect anything in particular with regards to your background. (Occasionally some people who come in with a bit more background. If you think you might be overprepared for CS 111, then let DLN know; another course, most likely CS 201, might be more appropriate.)
What do I need to do to register?
Add the course, as usual, through the normal registration process on The Hub. (Sign up for CS111.01 if you're a first- or second-year student, and CS111.02 if you're a junior or senior.) Complete this form to finish your registration so you can be placed in a Thursday/Friday group. As of September 3rd, times and rosters for the end-of-week sections have now been tentatively assigned.
What's the deal with the multiple sections?
To make the class partially sophomore priority and partially regular priority, we had to make two different official sections. (But the two sections meet in the same room at the same time, and each Thursday/Friday group will have a mixture of class years.) If you are a first- or second-year student, then you should sign up for CS111.01 (the sophomore-priority section). If you are a junior or senior, then you should sign up for CS111.02 (the regular-priority section).
If the section you just told me to register for is full, what should I do?
If you're a junior/senior, please sign up for the regular-priority section even if it's full (that is, waitlist CS111.02) no matter what.
If you're a first/second-year student, you may take an open seat in either section, but if both are full then you should sign up for the sophomore-priority section (that is, waitlist CS111.01).
It's September, and I just realized that I want to take this course. What should I do?
As of early September, both sections are now full, though there may be some room for a few more students. Waitlist the appropriate section (see the previous question). Then complete this form to indicate your Thursday/Friday preferences, and show up on the first day of class.
